What does You Do Not Have Permission to Play Fortnite Mean

Here’s what the you do not have permission to play Fortnite error message means and how to fix it.

If you were looking to login to Fortnite as soon as chapter 3 season 1 launched, you likely would have experienced some errors. One of the errors players were getting and will get when there are issues with the servers is you do not have permission to play Fortnite.

Every time you launch Fortnite, you may not always be granted permission to play it as the client-side and server-side are communicating to see if you have permission to get into the servers.

The majority of the time, you will be have any issues when logging into Fortnite. However, if there are too many players trying to login to Fortnite at the same time like we see with events, there’s a far higher chance of an error occuring.

Fortnite Servers Down

One of the rare errors players can get is the “You do not have permission to play Fortnite” message. This error seems to cause panic alarms for many players as it sounds more dire than what it actually is.

It’s an error that will occur when there are server issues such as a server unexpectidely being down or if there the scale of traffic is too large for the servers to handle at the time. The error usually occurs when there’s a new update or when there’s an event due to the amount of players trying to get online at the same time.

When the “you do not have permission to play Fortnite” error message appears, the most likely cause is because the servers are down. It does NOT mean you have been banned. In fact, you won’t even get this error message when you’ve been banned from Fortnite. Before we go into the ways in which you can fix this error message, ensure the servers are actually down first.

Check if the Fortnite servers are down

If the servers are down and you get the “You do not have permission to play Fortnite” message, the best thing to do is to first check if there are any ongoing issues with the servers before trying to troubleshoot the error yourself.

One of the quickest places to look is the Fortnite status Twitter account. They’ll always tweet when there are issues with the servers and will also update you when the servers are back online. If there’s a server issue, there’s nothing you can do to fix the issue.

You can also check the Epic Games Status page as they’ll add a message at the top of the page if there are any issues with the servers that’s causing the you do not have permission to play Fortnite error messsage.

Restart the Game

If the servers are down and you’re getting the you do not have permission to play Fortnite error, it’s always good to restart your game to see if the error is gone upon relaunching the game.

By restarting Fortnite, you’ll try to reconnect to the servers. There’s a chance that the servers could be back up and all you need to do was restart your game to establish a connecting with the servers.

There are some suggestions you should restart your router. That’s the worst advice you can get as it has nothing to do with your internet connection and would not recommend turning off your router to try and get rid of the “you do not have permission to play Fortnite” error message.

Most of the time, you should just wait it out if restarting your game does not work as it means you still cannot connect to the Fortnite servers. Usually, Epic Games are quick to address any server issues but if a server is damaged or not working, it might take them longer to resolve the issue.

Remember, the You do not have permission to play Fortnite does not mean you are banned. Check the server status and you’ll likely see they are currently down.
