The X-4 Stormwing Plane was added to Fortnite at the beginning of Season 7 (v7.00), and it looks like we’ll get getting the first change/update in the near future.
Eric Williamson, lead design at Epic Games, replied to a Twitter user who asked whether there were any plans to introduce some sort of damage if a player is in a plane when it explodes. Eric replied by stating that taking a small amount of damage to passengers of a plane when it’s been destroyed has been discussed, but they are still determining what amount would be fair.
Yes, we’ve discussed a small amount of damage to passengers when a plane is destroyed. Still determining what amount feels fair

Eric also stated that the Fortnite HUD will be receiving an update, with a health bar for vehicles being added to the game after v7.01.
Three days ago, Reddit user Nkrog21 created a post stating that there should be a penalty for being in a plane whilst it’s destroyed which has amassed more than 1,794 points. As a player currently takes no damage when a plane is destroyed, players don’t need to worry about jumping out before the plane is destroyed. Nkrog21 mentioned that he would shoot at planes and destory them, only for players to glide down without any damage, frustrating players who waste their bullets taking down planes. The player suggests 50 damage should be taken if they are in the plane upon it being destroyed, with many people commenting their approval.

Other players, however, have mentioned that they don’t agree with damage being added due to how slow planes are and how players are defenseless when gliding down which led the idea of planes being given a 25% helath buff and dealing 50 damage to the passengers of a plane upon destruction.

It’ll be interesting to see how much damage Epic decide is fair and when it’ll be implemented in game. Due to the fact this is still in discussion, it’s almost certain this won’t be added in the upcoming v7.01 update.
